(Salary Range SR-24 $4,968 to $5,811 per month -- Step C to G – depending on qualifications)

The Hawaii State Archives has an immediate vacancy for the newly created position of Deputy State Archivist.  The Deputy State Archivist is responsible for the general administration and day-to-day operation of the Hawaii State Archives.  Interviews pool will be formed next week, so interested parties are encouraged to apply ASAP!


Among the Major Duties of this position are:

  • Propose, develop, implement, and monitor the State Archives’ goals, objectives, policies, procedures and practices
  • Make recommendations for the development of programs, policies and/or initiatives to improve service to State Archives’ constituents and stakeholders
  • Review and recommend changes to policy and procedures related to the accessioning, arrangement and description of government records having archival value, preparation of finding aids, access to materials, and use of the research room
  • Represent the Hawaii State Archives in local, state, and national professional groups and organizations
  • Manage front-line supervisors, directs and instructs professional and other staff on completion of duties as assigned, at State Records Center, Hawaii State Digital Archives, Historic Records Branch and Translation Services
  • Coordinate the development of staff goals, objectives and annual work plans that identifies major activities, staff responsibilities, and timetable for completion
  • Serve as the preservation officer by assessing the preservation requirements of holdings and developing sound records processing and handling procedures
  • Assist in delivery of reference services by assisting on-site researchers in locating information
  • Assist in the planning, development and implementation of space management plans for the State Archives Division
  • Design, coordinate and lead staff on special projects
  • Coordinate or supervise special outreach programs aimed to highlight the State Archives’ mission and holdings
  • Promotes access to documents and information held at the Hawaii State Archives
  • Facilitates communication between the different work areas within the Archives, and between the Archives and other archival institutions, state agencies and departments, and county and city governments
